I am reminded of a story that a woman once told me. She was walking across the lobby of her workplace when she tripped over an uneven space on the floor. The pain from her twisted ankle shot up her leg and she crumpled to the ground. Just then a man came up to her and said, “I am a healer. Would you allow me to help you?” The woman said, “Yes” and thought anything to help this pain go away. The man cupped his hands around her ankle, was very quiet and for a few minutes they huddled on the lobby floor. She felt the pain drain from her ankle. “What was that?!” she asked. “Reiki”, the man replied. The woman’s doctor would later tell her that her ankle had been badly sprained; however, to his wonderment, the ankle seemed only minimally swollen. The woman smiled and thought, “Reiki!”.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced Ray — Key) is an ancient healing art that dates back to about 1000 B.C. The word Reiki means “Universal Life Energy”. “Rei” meaning “transcendental spirit” or “free passage” and “Ki” meaning “universal life force” or “vital life energy “. The ancient people of Tibet, China, Japan and Egypt used Reiki in healing, but eventually, its practice became lost. Then in the 19th century Japan, a Japanese scholar by the name of Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered the art of Reiki and invigorated the practice in his teachings as he passed his knowledge to students and they to theirs until it this very day.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is a gentle and non-invasive method of healing. The basis of Reiki is the heart (Love) and is guided by the mantra “Helps ever, Harms never”. Reiki works with the energy centers of the body or chakras. Using the energy centers as a guide, the practitioner places their hands either directly on the body or works slightly above the body in the recipient’s aura. The Reiki healer channels Universal Life Energy (Ki or Qi) through their hands acting as a conduit between the Universe and the recipient. Reiki stimulates the innate healing abilities of the recipient and goes to the root of what needs healing the most. The root is what lies under the symptoms of any discomfort and may manifest itself singularly or in any combination of the spirit, the emotional, the mental or the physical body. The focus of healing is always through the intention: “What is in the Highest Good of this being” and with that, profound healing can take place at all levels in the body and spirit.

Distance Healing

Because Qi ("chee") is a vital life force that has no limits in regards to time and space, a Reiki practitioner through meditative intention can bring healing regardless of distance. In other words, one does not have to work with a Reiki healer in person to experience profound healing. Because the spirit is limitless, energy can be sent to both past and future events. Is your animal preparing to travel? Has you or your animal suffered a troubled past? Are you preparing for a life change? Reiki can help strengthen, heal and bring harmony to all these situations regardless of time.

How does Distance Healing work?

The Reiki healer is trained in techniques for directing healing energy to a recipient. The practitioner first sets the Intention for the session and whether it be specific or general, it is always in the “Highest Good” of the recipient. Then the healer opens the energetic channel between them and the recipient — recognizing the recipient and gaining permission to do the work. Once the channel is open, the practitioner sends Reiki energy to the recipient — again, acting as a medium between the recipient and the divine life energy. The energy is received immediately and may even be experienced through body sensations as a result (tingling, heat, vibration). The energy is working with or without physical sensations and quite often is noticed as a sense of well-being and relaxation.
